Spring has sprung with lots of new life at Glenkilrie. Lambing is coming to an end and thankfully the weather has been on our side.
We are now looking for rain, to help the grass grow! Andrew, David and our seed rep Charlie, have had a socially distanced discussion this year. There are several grass reseeds to sow and the deer especially, are in for a treat with a herbal ley planned.
Last month we sourced stag deer calves from a farm, working a similar system to ourselves, to increase numbers. All last year’s calves are now out to grass and were so excited to be outside. Soon the hinds will start dispersing and hiding away on their own to calve.
As the cows successfully give birth, they are put outside with their calves and likewise are enjoying the spring weather.
Andrew is fascinated by the ground nesting birds and happily reports the sighting of lapwing chicks and oystercatchers.
