Roe Deer species are native to Britain. Unlike Red Deer which move in herds the Roe are more solitary and are in abundance around Glenkilrie, singly or in small groups. The Roe stalking at Glenkilrie is leased out whereas the wild red deer are managed by Andrew.
The gestation period for Roe deer is 9 months however, the first 4 months of this time the embryo does not grow as Roe Deer can delay the implanting of a fertilised egg. It is thought they do this to avoid birthing during harsh winters and calve in the spring.
Roe deer will hide their calves in the heather, and they will not move until old enough to run on behind their mothers. One of the first times I was ever out on the hill with Andrew, he told me I would likely never see a sitting calf. Just as the words left his mouth, we stumbled across one
