Over the years the number of Red Squirrels in Britain has drastically declined. Thankfully at Glenkilrie we have about 4 meantime and Morag has been feeding them all summer!
A squirrel’s nest is called a drey. Made from twigs forming a dome shape. Lined with moss, leaves, grass and bark. Their distinguishable fluffy red tail is used to help them steer and balance when jumping through the trees.
The life expectancy of a red squirrel, if they can survive their first winter, is on average 3 years. They can reach the age of 7 and even up to 10 years in captivity. Unfortunately, between 75-85% of red squirrels will die during their first winter due to the availability of autumn- winter tree seeds. Well hopefully no fear at Glenkilrie with Morag feeding them.
