December Farming

  • Post category:On the Farm

We always secretly hope for lots of winter snow to allow the Glenshee Ski Centre to open. At the beginning of December, we had our first snowfall of the season which followed an extremely wet November.

All our calves have been weaned, settled with little stress, and are eating well too. Our cows are onto winter food rations, made up with silage and straw. The protein content of the silage is lower than last year, so we require to up their feed. The red clover silage in 2019 was 20% protein, ideal! All heifers are grazing stubble turnips supplemented with silage.

The cows were scanned, and blood tested last month – always a nerve-racking time! The scanning went very well and good results documented. 181 cows scanned, 4 sets of twins and only 5 cows not in calf. That is one calf away from 100%!

All ewes were gathered for the mating season. Now, they are grazing the best fields on the farm, to ensure best nutrition possible. With tups into keep them company we have marked the 2021 calendar for a mid-April lambing.

All the deer calves are now weaned and brought inside for their first winter. They have settled well too.
