Calving is well under way, thankfully no interventions with births to date, but with more than 60 to go, help will surely be required for some cows. The dry weather has been great and allows us to put cows and their calves out to grass quickly.
Lambing is just underway and we look forward to seeing the lambs on the hills.
Stag deer calves of 2019 have started to grow their velvet and it won’t be long before they are back outside for the summer.
Anyone who has passed Glenkilrie recently may think we’ve got some pretty big moles, however, Andrew and Neil have been working on the biggest drainage system on the farm, that was installed in 1983. It is actually one of the most recent systems in Glenkilrie. The old stone drains have been in place for over a century.
Wading birds including lapwings, curlews, oyster-catchers have started to arrive for nesting in the spring. The black grouse activity is increasing on Glenkilrie hill and it is great fun to watch when they start lekking. This is where they gather to display and fight to attract the females.
