With a tough Spring out of the way we welcome Summer! Calving went well with lots of healthy calves born with minimal assistance. Lambing was a challenge due late grass growth and frost well into spring.
Thankfully, June’s grass growth has made up for the lack of movement through April/May and today we are cutting silage and filling the pit. A favourite time on the farm watching the team and helping Morag make tea for the men.
I think it will seldom be the case now, that I get a run in the tractor with Andrew as our children will be desperate to go with dad! Times change quickly!
Sheep shearing has begun. 200 down and over 1000 to go. Andrew and Neil do the majority of the shearing, with a few hundred done by Steven Knox and his team. Davie is our chief wool roller. This year Alasdair has been overseeing the proceedings and shows a keen interest despite being 20 months old.
Forage crops are now drilled for winter feeding. Deer calving is coming to an end, with lots of young calves running behind their mother and it looks to be a successful calving. We will know better when it comes to tagging them. The velvet growing on our stags this year is already very impressive and we look forward to seeing how many points Jock will have. We will keep you posted.
